Sixteen plain Jane and average Joe Americans are marooned on the deserted island of Puala Tiga in the South China Sea for 39 days, where they must survive not only the island, but each other, as every three days, one person is voted off. The 16 are split in to two tribes of 8. Tagi consists of Dirk, Kelly, Richard, Rudy, Sean, Sonja, Stacey and Susan. Pagong consists of BB, Colleen, Gervase, Greg, Gretchen, Jenna, Joel and Ramoana. In the first 3 days, the tribes get to know each other, and while BB's domineering attitude annoys some of his tribemates, Richard also begins to get on the nerves of the Tagi camp as he attempts to lead them in a group direction. When Pagong won the first Immunity Challenge (a competition), Tagi had to go to Tribal Council, where they must vote someone off of the island. Despite Stacey's attempts to form a female alliance against 72-year-old Rudy, it was Sonja Christopher who was voted off of the island with 4 of the 8 votes. The tribe has spoken.

Survivor is back, and this time the 16 American contestants will be battling it out in The Australian Outback for 42 days, all vying for the grand prize of $1million. At the beginning of the show, the 16 are split into two tribes - Kucha and Ogakor. In the first 3 days in the Outback, Debb begins to get on the nerves of her fellow islanders with her attempts to take control, while Kimmi's over-eagerness to have fun grabs Jeff the wrong way, and Keith and Jerri clash almost immediately. When Ogakor wins the first Immunity Challenge, Kucha makes the long hike to Tribal Council where, with a 7-1 unanimous vote, Debb is voted out of the Outback. The tribe has spoken.

The eighteen people were divided into three tribes named Saboga, Mogo Mogo and Chapera. The All-Stars were given nothing but their water canteens. They were not told the names of the other castaways or how many tribes there were. Armed with no information, no fire and no help, these eighteen All-Stars would be challenged once again to outwit, outlast and outplay one another.

20 contestants from previous seasons of Survivor return for another shot at the million dollars. 10 Ultra fans head off to the Rock Islands of Palau, Micronesia to face ten former castaways. The new castaways arrive with no idea that they will be facing the former contestants, breaking into two separate tribes.

As the game of Survivor draws to its conclusion, the remaining six contestants fight it out for a place in the final four. The Tagi Alliance begins to crumble, as Rudy and Richard make plans to be in the final two, and Susan and Kelly's friendship begins to disintegrate. When Sean wins the Reward Challenge, he gets a night on a luxury cruise liner and meets up with his father. The Alliance is very divided, and at the time of the Immunity Challenge, where the six must stand on a plank in the sea for as long as possible, Richard, Susan and Rudy decided that either Sean or Kelly would be going home. When Kelly won Immunity, it seemed Sean was doomed to go home, but then the Alliance changed its mind, and with four votes, Colleen Haskell, the final member of the original Pagong tribe, was voted off of the island. The tribe has spoken.

As the All-Stars gather expecting a challenge, they are hit with another twist. All the members of Mogo Mogo became members of Chapera and all of the members of Chapera became members of Mogo Mogo, except for Amber. The old Mogo Mogo members would now live at the Chapera camp, and the old Chapera members, except for Amber, would now live at the Mogo Mogo camp. Mogo Mogo scored immunity which led Rob M. to lead an offer with Lex concerning Amber, and in the end, Jerri was voted out of the tribe.

The men win a feast and take an excursion and purposely leave Matthew behind, leaving him to plan his mode of survival in the game. Meanwhile, after Shawna becomes ill, the alliance in the women's tribe may crumble.

As it rained heavily over Saboga, the tribe began losing morale. Rudy took the tribes mind off of hunger and thirst by telling them stories from his time in Vietnam. At Mogo Mogo, the tribe had varying reactions as Richard decided to walk around camp naked. The three tribes were shocked to find a box secured with three locks at each of their camps. The Rewards Challenge has the contestants running through a maze of ropes collecting a bag of puzzle pieces at the eight stations. Once a bag is found they must deliver it back to the table. After all the bags are found then a puzzle is to be constructed of an eight point rose. The winner will receive Immunity guaranteeing their spot in the finals. The Immunity Challenge has the contestants up on a perch above the water. With each players perch fitted to their shoe size, no one will have an advantage. Every 15 minutes a piece of the perch is removed. The winner is also guaranteed a spot in the finals.
